रक्षाबन्धन एक हिन्दू व जैन त्योहार है जो प्रतिवर्ष श्रावण मास की पूर्णिमा के दिन मनाया जाता है। श्रावण (सावन) में मनाये जाने के कारण इसे श्रावणी (सावनी) या सलूनो भी कहते हैं। रक्षाबन्धन में राखी या रक्षासूत्र का सबसे अधिक महत्त्व है। राखी कच्चे सूत जैसे सस्ती वस्तु से लेकर रंगीन कलावे, रेशमी धागे, तथा सोने या चाँदी जैसी मँहगी वस्तु तक की हो सकती है। राखी सामान्यतः बहनें भाई को ही बाँधती हैं परन्तु ब्राह्मणों, गुरुओं और परिवार में छोटी लड़कियों द्वारा सम्मानित सम्बंधियों (जैसे पुत्री द्वारा पिता को) भी बाँधी जाती है। कभी-कभी सार्वजनिक रूप से किसी नेता या प्रतिष्ठित व्यक्ति को भी राखी बाँधी जाती है।

अब तो प्रकृति संरक्षण हेतु वृक्षों को राखी बाँधने की परम्परा भी प्रारम्भ हो गयी है। हिन्दुस्तान में राष्ट्रीय स्वयंसेवक संघ के पुरुष सदस्य परस्पर भाईचारे के लिये एक दूसरे को भगवा रंग की राखी बाँधते हैं। हिन्दू धर्म के सभी धार्मिक अनुष्ठानों में रक्षासूत्र बाँधते समय कर्मकाण्डी पण्डित या आचार्य संस्कृत में एक श्लोक का उच्चारण करते हैं, जिसमें रक्षाबन्धन का सम्बन्ध राजा बलि से स्पष्ट रूप से दृष्टिगोचर होता है। भविष्यपुराण के अनुसार इन्द्राणी द्वारा निर्मित रक्षासूत्र को देवगुरु बृहस्पति ने इन्द्र के हाथों बांधते हुए निम्नलिखित स्वस्तिवाचन किया (यह श्लोक रक्षाबन्धन का अभीष्ट मन्त्र है)-

येन बद्धो बलिराजा दानवेन्द्रो महाबल:।
तेन त्वामपि बध्नामि रक्षे मा चल मा चल ॥
इस श्लोक का हिन्दी भावार्थ है- “जिस रक्षासूत्र से महान शक्तिशाली दानवेन्द्र राजा बलि को बाँधा गया था, उसी सूत्र से मैं तुझे बाँधता हूँ। हे रक्षे (राखी)! तुम अडिग रहना (तू अपने संकल्प से कभी भी विचलित न हो।)”

“Raksha Bandhan is celebrated in Shravana month during full moon day or Purnima day.

The best time to tie Rakhi on Raksha Bandhan is during Aparahna which is late afternoon according to Hindu division of the day. If Aparahna time is not available then Pradosh time is also suitable to perform rituals related to Raksha Bandhan.

Raksha Bandhan rituals should not be done during Bhadra. Bhadra is malicious time which should be avoided for all auspicious work. Most Hindu religious texts, including Vratraj, advise avoiding Bhadra time to tie Rakhi during Raksha Bandhan festival.

It should be noted that Bhadra prevails during the first half of Purnima Tithi. Hence one should wait for Bhadra to get over before starting any auspicious work. In North India, it is customary to tie Rakhi in the morning which might not be a suitable time to do it. The DrikPanchang’s team believes that it might be due to ignorance. When such information is easily available one should avoid tying Rakhi during Bhadra.

Some sources advise to avoid Bhadra Mukha and perform Rakhi ceremony during Bhadra Punchha if it has to be done during Bhadra in the early morning. However, our team was not able to find any authority to validate this belief.
