पिठोरी अमावस्या के दिन विवाहिता औरतें अपने बच्चों एवं पति के लिए ये व्रत रखती है. यह त्यौहार उत्तरी भारत के कैलेंडर के अनुसार मनाया जाता है. देश के कुछ जगहों पर इसे सावन महिना का ही दिन माना जाता है. आंध्रप्रदेश, उड़ीसा, कर्नाटक एवं तमिलनाडु में पिठोरी अमावस्या को पोलाला अमावस्या कहते है.
